about the dye plant -

crab apple blossoms -

I'm lucky to live on a street lined with crab apple trees. The blossoms were a bright pink, so naturally, I was expecting a pink to red shade. I collected a mixture of blooming and pre-bloom flowers. The pre-bloom flowers were a much darker magenta. The dye bath shifted in color from yellow to green as it was heated, something I notice often when dyeing. The silk was left in the dye bath overnight, because I wanted a nice pigmented shade.
