hand dyed using alkanet & red cabbage, producing a purple-grey

printed pattern - protea bouquet

about the dye plant -

alkanet & red cabbage -

This silk came from a series of experiments. Usually, alkanet produces a light mauve, but because I started this bath in a pot that I had just dyed with madder, the dye color shifted to a tan. I wanted to see what would happen if I over-dyed the silk with red cabbage, which typically produces a blue. I shifted the red cabbage dye bath with vinegar (making the dye itself a red). The reaction of the different dye plants and silk eventually created this wonderful purple-y grey.
