about the dye plant -

red onion skins –

These onions were not harvested from my garden, but like the avocado, it's commonly used in dyeing. Depending on the type of onion (yellow, red) you will achieve very different colors. I was doing some reading and apparently green is very difficult to achieve, so I consider myself lucky. Onions also shift in color very quickly. The color starts as yellow-y brown, shifts to green and then to a rich mahogany.
