hand dyed using madder root, producing a bright red orange

printed pattern - gladiola

about the dye plant -

madder root –

Like the alkanet, the root of the madder is what’s used in dyeing.  This plant produces bright yellow flowers, so it was a surprise to see such a rich red tone. I did not forage the madder locally, however it will grow in my zone, so I plan on adding madder to my dye garden next year. Once the madder is planted, it will take about three years for the plant to become established enough for me to harvest its roots for my dye baths.
