hand dyed using alkanet, producing a light mauve
printed pattern - butterfly bush
about the dye plant -
The alkanet’s flower is a small blue to purple bloom, reminding me a bit of brunnera (also known as Siberian bugloss). I did not grow this particular plant in my garden this year, but I am on the hunt for alkanet seeds (which are apparently very hard to find). The root of the plant is what is used for the dyeing. I have achieved a silvery mauve to bright amethyst purple from the alkanet, just by shifting the amount of time the silk sat in the dye bath.
